A dream is like a river, ever changing as it flows. And a dreamer's just a vessel that must follow where it goes. And that's precisely William S Pinckney did several years ago by coming to India to realize his long cherished dreams. The story of Pinckney, MD and CEO of Amway India is of building an empire starting from scratch. At a time when Indian professionals were looking Westward, Pinckney dared to look Eastwards and revolutionised the concept of direct selling, a concept till then, an unrealised market reality.
Today, Amway India is the leading FMCG Company with annual turnover of Rs 6.36 billion and it expects to cross Rs 15 billion in coming few years. A subsidiary of US-based Amway Corporation, which has its presence in 56 countries and a turnover of $5 billion, it goes to Pinckney's credit of putting Indian operations on top ten. With the projected sell of Rs 10 billion, he wants to see India on top five, which of course will not be an upheaval task for Pinckney. With emphasis on personal and domestic care, Amway today is a household name in India. Beginning its operation in 1998, the company has grown with leaps and bounds and is making its foray into other areas. A recent tie-up has enabled the FMCG giant to include packaged rice to its line of product. The other launches have been in premium skin care areas. Definitely, action speaks louder than words for the firebrand CEO of Amway.

| To make his dream come true Pinckney knew he would have to reach out to the wider spectrum of Indian middle class. Amway then launched its famous campaign-"There is no one just like Amway", which helped her position in the Indian psyche. Pinckney who has been the man in action during the successful operations in Indonesia, Brazil and the Philippines has had an association of 17 years with Amway before coming to India and sweeping the consumer goods market.
Pinckney has been active in several other forums mainly with commerce and industries. He has been on the National Committee on Consumer Affairs and Council for MNCs Confederation of Indian Industries. He was the Convenor of the Conference on Consumer Markets in India in August 2002. He also heads the IDSA (Indian Direct Selling Association) as Chairman. Fond of golf, Pinckney is in the list of Delhi's who's who and has made the city, virtually his second home. All said done, Pinckney's greatest contribution is-he has empowered Indian to dream, a dream which is very much in the ambit of success. |
