He is flying high and seizing every opportunity at sight. After all, sky is the limit for him. He has realised that it's the time to venture out in the Indian sky, and maneuver the air-pockets adroitly. It is B. K. Ong, General Manager India, Singapore Airlines. Ong is not a new name to people who are familiar with the aviation industry. A high-flying, energetic and a civil aviation wizard, Ong has had an extraordinary career with Airlines industry. A keen observer and a master of his trade, Ong's innovative ideas have helped Singapore Airlines chart out new successful routes for the carrier service. The Airlines, under his supervision recently announced a direct flight between Amritsar and Singapore three days a week.

The Airlines is offering one of the most competitive rates on the route, which is less than Rs 19,000 for the economic class. Ong believes in tapping the ever-growing class of Indian Diaspora who are going to Singapore either seeking employment or for business. Ong is all set to take off Singapore Airlines to greater heights by introducing more direct flights to Singapore. Despite market speculations that direct flights, catering to limited segment of people are economically unviable, Ong has proved his market strategists wrong. Overcoming Indian bureaucratic and infrastructure air pockets, Ong has never distracted himself from his goal.

He is one of those hard-core project executors who believe that obstacles are what you see when you take your eyes off the goal. It was his conviction, which made Amritsar the 10th Indian direct destination from Singapore. It was not long back when Singapore Airlines introduced its direct flights between Singapore and Ahmedabad. It made the civil aviation majors jittery, as Singapore Airlines was the first international airline to fly to Ahmedabad. Ong, who is known to have launched several successful flight operations, is also known for his well thought market strategy.

While starting a flight and making Amritsar as a western India's hub, he knew well that he would be able to consolidate tourists from nearby states like Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir also. A man of action, Ong, like his predecessors, has helped Singapore Airlines make inroad into virgin territories. Beginning its operations to India in 1970, today the Singapore Airlines operates 38 weekly flights to different Indian cities. It has 12 flights to Mumbai, daily flights each to Delhi and Chennai, and three flights each to Bangalore, Kolkata and Ahmedabad. It also operates in cities like Hyderabad, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. A team leader and a man of conviction, Ong is sure to take Singapore Airlines to newer destinations of success.
